Sumter, South Carolina
There’s a lot of pride and history in our name
Named after General Thomas Sumter, Sumter shares many of his traits. Thomas Sumter worked hard meeting the needs of his widowed mother. Later, he worked equally hard for his country under four presidents, serving as a South Carolina Senator and retiring as a General and respected patriot of the American Revolution. In fact, the Mel Gibson character in the 2000 movie The Patriot was loosely modeled after Thomas Sumter.
Today, Sumter takes the best characteristics from our past and melds them with the sweet amenities of a modern metropolitan community that cherishes our history as well as our contemporary culture. We still work hard serving the needs of those who visit, and we still take pride in a community we truly love. From the tranquil beauty of Swan Lake to the delightful tree-lined downtown, Sumter has a way of embracing everyone who visits with a warm welcome they never forget.
Sumter offers a wide variety of wonderful accommodations, places to enjoy a great meal and convenient transportation. We’ve provided several links to help you make the most of your visit:
